Creatress Blurs Reality And Fantasy Using VR

Creatress has a talent for seamlessly merging virtual reality and live performance to create a truly unique and immersive experience. Creatress's journey began in December 2021 when she first donned the MetaQuest 2 headset. This marked the genesis of her interest in virtual reality art, an interest that seamlessly intertwined with her lifelong passion for performance art. From theater and orchestra to Balinese dance and live painting, Creatress's diverse background laid the foundation for her groundbreaking fusion of 3D sculpting in virtual reality and live performances. "The main reason I pursued this creative path was the experience at my very first performance. The energy between the audience and me was something incredibly special I want to continue to explore," reflects Creatress.

At the heart of Creatress's performances lies the MetaQuest Pro headset and Gravity Sketch, a 3D modeling software built for VR. This combination allows her to sculpt intricate and complex 3D creations in real-time while dancing to a carefully curated soundtrack. The audience witnesses her unique point of view projected onto screens, creating a mesmerizing spectacle. However, the road to artistic nirvana is not without its challenges. Technical glitches and Wi-Fi connectivity issues during performances are common hurdles, yet Creatress navigates them with grace, showcasing the resilience of an artist committed to pushing boundaries.

“In 2022 I got commissioned to do the opening performance for the first Innovation Summit produced by Paris Hiltons company 11:11 and immediately after the performance, Randi Zuckerberg & Paris Hilton came onstage and did a fireside chat where Randi asked Paris what she thought of Creatress. Right there on stage Paris said she loved that I can make these incredible sculptures and am showing people a new medium that is also more interesting than watching live painting. For someone like Paris who’s seen it all, has access to world class entertainment and any tech she wants, to say this about my work was a huge confirmation that the performances do have an impact on the audience.”

According to Creatress, the path to becoming a successful VR performance artist involves mastering 3D sculpting skills, acquiring the right equipment, and, perhaps most challenging, connecting with event organizers or curators willing to invest in this innovative form of live art. Creatress advocates for perseverance, recommending aspiring artists to offer their services, perform for exposure, and build a portfolio of experiences.

Creatress's performances are often a collaborative symphony, with musicians setting the tone for her visual odyssey. Collaborations with artists like Santiago, DJ EV, and DJ GriffterMusic have added layers of complexity to her immersive experiences. A dream of hers is to share the stage with none other than Beyoncé one day. To stay at the forefront of the ever-evolving VR medium, Creatress founded the VR Alliance—a community where VR artists share updates, tools, and innovations. This collective effort ensures that each member remains up-to-date with the latest developments, a crucial factor in incorporating cutting-edge technology into their art.

“I created a group called the VR Alliance where a bunch of us VR artists share news updates from VR companies and news channels we come across. We discuss new updates and share tools we’re excited about which helps everyone stay up to date. Following the companies on social media or subscribing to their newsletters is also a great way to stay updated. I love to test new features as soon as I get them, for example I’ve now used mixed reality mode during performances, so the audience can see themselves on screen too while I sculpt.”

Looking ahead, Creatress envisions a future where VR headsets become more accessible, leading to increased mass adoption. She hopes for lighter, smaller headsets and full-body haptic suits, creating even more immersive experiences for artists and audiences alike. As Creatress continues to push the boundaries of art and technology, her performances stand as a pillar to the transformative power of virtual reality in shaping the future of artistic expression.
